Welcome to Junior Infants
We are very much looking forward to meeting your child in September. In order that your son/daughter may have a happy introduction to school life next term, we suggest that you consider the following guidelines as recommended by the I.N.T.O. publication - "Your Child in the Primary School."
Children should be able to:
Allow your child/children to do things independently.
Encourage confidence by having children dress themselves. Please allow extra time for this in the morning.
Don't criticise if things are not exactly to your liking. Praise their efforts at every opportunity.
Children cannot be independent if they cannot manage the equipment you provide. Please give some thought to the items your child needs to get through the school day. If your child cannot tie laces, shoes with Velcro fasteners will enable him/her to fix his/her own shoes.
Choose a lunch box and drink that your child can open easily and does not require assistance.
Choose lunches that will ensure he is independent of the teacher. For example peel his/her orange before school and open any packed food if your son/daughter cannot manage it him/herself.
Label all your children's clothes (including jackets) and belongings clearly. Check these labels regularly to ensure that they are still legible.
Junior Infants in St Dominic's
The School Day - Our Junior and Senior Infant day begins at 9.20am and ends at 2.00pm.
Children in Junior Infants cover all of the core curriculum subjects - Irish, English, Maths, History, Geography, Science, Music, Art, Drama, Physical Education and Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE). All of these subjects are taught by the class teacher.
Children will benefit from the support of the school's Learning Support Teachers through Early Intervention and Literacy Lift-Off.
Homework
Children in Junior Infants will receive homework from the end of September. Homework will be given every night except for Friday. The homework in Junior Infants will involve both written and oral work. It should take no more than 20 minutes to complete. Please initial or sign your son/daughters homework every night but do not do it for them.
Preparing for School
Over the summer you could help your son/daughter prepare for school by reading to them regularly, by encouraging them to draw or colour in pictures and also by learning some Nursery Rhymes. It is also often a great help if children can write their own names in lower case letters - not capitals.
The First Day
On the first day of school, we encourage Junior Infants to attend from 9.20 - 12.30.
When you come into the classroom, you will find your son/daughters name already on a table. Encourage your child to sit down. It is important that you leave as soon as possible after this.
After the first month in school, we encourage you to help your child to become as independent as possible. In the mornings, we operate a "Stop, Drop and Go" system, whereby you drop your child off at or near the school gate and allow them to walk up to the supervising teachers who are on duty every morning from 9.20am. Their teacher will bring them to class.
Children should be able to:
- Put on and take off coats and hang them up.
- Use the toilet properly and wash their hands.
- Tidy up after their activities carefully and neatly.
- Share toys and activities.
- Use a handkerchief or tissue.
- Put belongings in and out of their school bag or lunch box independently.
