What is an Active School?
The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often.
You can learn more about the Active School Flag here. Active Students Learn More! The Active Schools website has taught us lots of interesting facts about the benefits of being active during the day! |
Our Active Schools Work in St. Dominics!
We began our work towards achieving our Active School Flag in 2017. Over the past number of years our committee members, coordinators, school staff, student body and parents having been working together to try to create a more physically active school community. We have been lucky to have forged some fantastic partnerships with local groups and organisations who have helped us on our journey towards the Active School Flag. This year is a renewal year - we are hoping to build on the work we have done in the past and the promote even greater levels of physical activity in our school. Have a look at our different active schools pages above (Physical Activity, Physical Education, Active Schools Partnerships and Active Schools Week) to see our progress to date and to keep informed about upcoming activities and events.
Below you will find out more about our Active Schools committee and our Active Schools Slogan for our renewal year (2022-2023). Further down this page you will see some of the committees and work from previous years.
Congratulations to Aimee, from 5th Class who won our Active Schools Slogan Competition! A great slogan Aimee and a great reminder of the fun we can have while getting fitter and healthier also! :-)
PE Equipment Audit (May 2023)
We decided that it was a good idea to carry out another audit of our PE equipment last week, in preparation for this week's Active Schools Week. Some of our committee members, as well as volunteers from other classes helped to take all our PE equipment out of the shed. They went through everything to make sure everything was in working order, counted all the items and rearranged them neatly in the shed ready for next week. A great effort!
Sporting Heroes!
St. Dominic's NS is full of sporting heroes in everything from community games winners, to running, to football, to hurling, to dance and beyond! You will find some of our sporting heroes in the gallery below! If you have a sporting achievement you are proud of please tell a committee member and we will add your photo to the gallery!
Active Schools Committee Meetings (December 2022)
Our Active Schools Committee take their work very seriously. Here they are at a meeting in December brainstorming fun new activities for our Active Lines!
Our Active Schools Committee 2022-2023
Meet our Active Schools committee for 2022-2023. Several young people applied to be a member of our committee, writing about the reasons they think they should be on the committee and what they could bring to our Active Schools work. It was a very tough job narrowing the applicants down.
A Well Deserved Treat! (May 2020)
The Active Schools Committee recently enjoyed a trip to Mac's Shack as a reward for all their hard work over the year. Well done to all!
Active Schools Committee (2019-2020)
We have a very hardworking team on our Active School Flag Committee. The committee is made up of students from 1st to 6th class. Ms Hughes and Ms Orohoe are the two teachers who are on the committee to help the members come up with ideas and strategies to make our school healthier and more active!
